Following the Marchioness Tragedy, the Royal Borough of Kensington-Chelsea mandated Coronor Knapman to help identify the victims. What happens next shocked the victims’ families and caused worldwide outrage:
Coroner Knapman severed the hands of 27 the Marchioness victims out of the 51 confirmed dead.
He severed the limbs without the permission or knowledge of the victims’ family members.
The horrible result?
Coroner Knapman “lost” the limbs – in some cases never to be recovered.
One victim’s hands were recovered 4 years later from the bottom of Coroner Knapman’s freezer – lost and forgotten.
Other victims’ families received the wrong body for burial and some of the victims had to be buried without their hands.
